Early Life and Education
Divyanka was born on 14 December 1984 in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, a date given by both Wikipedia and Republic World. She studied at Carmel Convent School in her home city and later graduated from the Sarojini Naidu Government Girls PG College there. Away from the classroom she took a mountaineering course at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi, an unusual line on any actor’s résumé.
Her first brush with the media came through radio: she worked as an anchor for All India Radio in Bhopal. Pageants followed. At Pantene Zee Teen Queen in 2003 she won the Miss Beautiful Skin title, and in 2004 she entered the talent hunt India’s Best Cinestars Ki Khoj, reaching the top eight from the Bhopal zone before trying again from Indore, where she was runner-up. In 2005 she was crowned Miss Bhopal.
Career
First steps on screen
Divyanka’s acting debut was a Doordarshan telefilm, after which she presented a programme called Akash Vani. Her first television serial roles were Payal in Star One’s Yeh Dil Chahe More (2005) and Melanie in Viraasat (2006).
Banoo Main Teri Dulhann (2006–2009)
The big break came in August 2006, when Zee TV cast her in Banoo Main Teri Dulhann to play two women, Vidya and Divya. The serial lasted three years, closing in 2009, and earned her the Indian Television Academy Award for Best Actress in the drama category along with the Indian Telly Award for Fresh New Face.
Alongside fiction she said yes to plenty of non-fiction: she was a contestant on Zee TV’s Khana Khazana in 2006, on Sahara One’s Jjhoom India in 2007, and on Imagine TV’s Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan in 2008.
Comedy and romance (2010–2012)
In 2010 she switched to comedy as Rashmi Sharma, a housewife, in SAB TV’s Mrs. & Mr. Sharma Allahabadwale. She tried the obstacle course of Zor Ka Jhatka: Total Wipeout in 2011, then led SAB TV’s Chintu Chinki Aur Ek Badi Si Love Story. In 2012 she played Nikita opposite Iqbal Khan in Star Plus’s anthology Teri Meri Love Stories, and the same year she appeared as Rani Padmavati in the film Lala Hardaul.
Dr Ishita Bhalla in Yeh Hai Mohabbatein (2013–2019)
Her longest-running and best-known part was Dr Ishita Bhalla in Ekta Kapoor’s Yeh Hai Mohabbatein. Ishita is a dentist who cannot have children and marries a chief executive so that his young daughter can have a mother’s love. Divyanka played her opposite Karan Patel, who was Raman Bhalla. The show began in December 2013 and stayed on air for six years, wrapping up at the end of 2019. It was also where she met her future husband.
By 2017 her popularity had gone beyond the TV ratings. That year she became the first Indian television actress to feature on the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list, entering at number 96. Across her career, Wikipedia counts three ITA Awards, nine Indian Telly Awards and seven Gold Awards.
Hosting and web shows
Divyanka has stepped behind the anchor’s desk several times. She presented Star Plus’s singing contest The Voice 3 in early 2019, and from December 2020 until March 2021 she hosted Sony TV’s Crime Patrol. On streaming platforms she has played Chef Nithya Sharma in Coldd Lassi Aur Chicken Masala (2019) and Parvati in the spy thriller Adrishyam – The Invisible Heroes (2023), and she appeared in The Magic Of Shiri (2024).
