Early Life and Family

Munawar Faruqui was born on 28 January 1992 in Junagadh, Gujarat, according to Filmibeat and India Forums; birthday reports by IANS, the Free Press Journal and Sakshi Post give ages that match that year. He grew up with three sisters. In a 2021 interview with The Hindu, he explained that his father, a driver, relocated the family to Mumbai in 2007, hoping to begin again after a hard spell back home. In 2021 The Hindu described him as a resident of Dongri in Mumbai.

Money was tight. From 2008 his father was ill and confined to bed, Faruqui told The Hindu, which left him responsible for the household at the age of 17. He worked at a utensil store while still at school, and taught himself English and Hindi from the newspapers his boss bought and by watching films. He has also recalled, as reported by the Hindustan Times, selling samosas that his mother and grandmother made after his father’s debt meant he could not complete his education.

Stand-up comedy and music

Faruqui made his name with stand-up videos on YouTube. The Indian Express described his comedy in 2021 as topical, observational and political. Music runs alongside the comedy: he released his debut song “Jawab” with musician Spectra in August 2020, and his album Madari came out in 2023, its title track inspired by the late actor Irrfan Khan. The Hindu has written that Urdu poetry and rap music are his other passions.
