Early Life and Education

Swara was born on 9 April 1988 in Delhi, according to Wikipedia. Her father, C. Uday Bhaskar, served as an officer in the Indian Navy, and her mother, Ira Bhaskar, teaches cinema studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University. She grew up in the capital and went to Sardar Patel Vidyalaya.

For her undergraduate degree she read English at Miranda House, where Minissha Lamba was a classmate, and she then took a master’s in sociology at JNU. While still in Delhi she acted on stage with N. K. Sharma’s Act One theatre group, before moving to Mumbai in 2008 to try films.

Film Career

Her first screen role came in Madholal Keep Walking (2009), which played at the Cairo International Film Festival but did poorly in Indian cinemas. A supporting part in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish (2010), opposite a cast led by Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, followed.

The turning point was Tanu Weds Manu (2011). As Payal, the friend of Kangana Ranaut’s lead character, she drew good reviews and her first Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress. A second nomination came for Raanjhanaa (2013), the Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor romance. In 2015 she was back as Payal in Tanu Weds Manu Returns and played Rajkumari Chandrika in Sooraj Barjatya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo with Salman Khan, and both films ranked among that year’s biggest Hindi hits.

Lead roles in smaller films then changed how the industry saw her. In Nil Battey Sannata (2016) she played Chanda Sahay; it was her fourth project with Anand L. Rai and won her the Screen Award for Best Actress (Critics). As Anarkali in Anaarkali of Aarah (2017) she earned a Filmfare Best Actress (Critics) nomination. Veere Di Wedding (2018), in which she played Sakshi Soni alongside Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor and Shikha Talsania, brought her third Filmfare nomination in the supporting category.

Swara Bhasker in Rise and Fall 2 (2026)

Her entry was made public on 17 September 2026, when India Today listed her in the opening batch of four names for Rise and Fall 2, along with Priyanka Chahar Choudhary, Karan Patel and Shehzad Poonawalla. Prime Video and Banijay Asia brought the show back with Virender Sehwag replacing season 1 host Ashneer Grover, and the season opened on 26 September 2026 with 15 contestants split into Rulers and Workers, Esquire India reported. A separate Esquire India preview called her probably the least expected name on the list. Season 1 had ended with a win for Arjun Bijlani, according to the show’s Wikipedia page.

By mid-October she was fighting for the top job in the Tower. An episode summary from Indian Broadcasting World dated 14 October said she and Niharika Tiwari had become the two finalists for the Ultimate Ruler crown. With the Workers’ support she was allowed to knock one Ruler out of contention and chose Rishabh Jaiswal. For the deciding round each finalist backed a Worker: Swara went with Manish Kashyap while Niharika picked Sara Gurpal, according to Adgully. Niharika won the crown, taking over from Shehzad Poonawalla, Business Upturn reported on 15 October.

Swara stayed in the game after that loss. In the episode recapped by Filmibeat on 19 October, she argued that the Penthouse group managed to stay civil even when they fought, and her running exchanges with Priyanka carried on. Housemates Gautam Gulati and Niharika are also part of this season.

For the latest standings in the Tower, see our Rise and Fall 2 contestants list.
