Childhood in Dehradun and College in Delhi
Archana Puran Singh was born on 26 September 1962 in Dehradun, according to Wikipedia. Her father, Chaudhary Puran Singh, practised law, and she grew up the third of four children. She studied at Convent of Jesus and Mary in Dehradun up to Class 11 before heading to Delhi, where she read literature at Lady Shri Ram College and lived in the college hostel.
Films were not the plan when the family’s contacts took her to Mumbai after graduation. She ended up living as a paying guest for four years in the home of Mitali Mukherjee, the wife of singer Bhupinder Singh, and the city’s film world found her from there.
Career
From Nikaah to Raja Hindustani
Her first film appearance came in Nikaah (1982), when she was 20. Five years later she starred opposite Naseeruddin Shah in Jalwa (1987). The late 1980s and early 1990s brought parts in Agneepath (1990), Saudagar (1991), Shola aur Shabnam (1992) and Aashiq Awara (1993). Her turn as Shalu in Raja Hindustani (1996) earned her a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Miss Braganza and the comic roles
Over time Bollywood mostly cast her in supporting parts, many of them comic. The breakout was Miss Braganza in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, a role that brought her a Best Comedian nomination. She followed it with Preeto in Mohabbatein (2000), Nayantara in Krrish (2006), and roles in Masti, Love Story 2050, De Dana Dan and Bol Bachchan. Across cinema and television she has worked on more than 100 titles.
Netflix gave her character a second life in 2025, when she played Mrs. Braganza-Malhotra in Nadaaniyan. In 2026 she appeared as Malini Pherwani in another Netflix film, Toaster, and as Urmila Devi in the web series Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya.
Television host, director and producer
Her small-screen career began on Doordarshan with the Sunday sitcom Mr Ya Mrs, in which she played a working woman while Jayant Kriplani stayed home as the house-husband. In 1993 she became an anchor with Zee TV’s Wah, Kya Scene Hai, and she went on to present Uncensored, which won her an Asian Television Award for best entertainment presenter. She played Prema Shalini in the comedy Shrimaan Shrimati (1994–1999), acted in Junoon, and fronted Archana Talkies on Sony.
She also worked behind the camera, directing the sitcoms Jaane Bhi Do Paaro and Nehle Pe Dehla and producing Samne Wali Khidki.
The judge’s chair
Sony’s Comedy Circus made her a fixture of TV comedy; she sat on its panel from 2007 to 2018. In 2019 she took over from Navjot Singh Sidhu as the permanent guest on The Kapil Sharma Show, and she carried the role to Netflix’s The Great Indian Kapil Show in 2024. She also judged India’s Laughter Champion in 2022, and in 2015 played Begum Paro in SAB TV’s The Great Indian Family Drama.
Voice work and YouTube
She started dubbing in 2010, voicing the villain of the Indian animated film Pangaa Gang, and later gave Zeta, leader of Eagle Island, her voice in the Hindi dub of The Angry Birds Movie 2. Since December 2024 she has also run her own YouTube channel, and Wikipedia now lists YouTuber among her occupations.

Pati Patni Aur Panga 2
In late September 2026 The Indian Express named Archana and Parmeet among the confirmed couples for the second season of the Colors show, noting that they have been married for over three decades. In her statement, she joked: “We’ve been testing each other’s patience for over 34 years, so our pangebaazi is really just everyday life for us!”
The new season got under way on 10 October 2026 and is shown at 9 pm each Saturday and Sunday on Colors TV, streaming on JioHotstar. Sonali Bendre and Munawar Faruqui present it, and seven celebrity couples are in the running.
The early episodes have made her sparring with Munawar a talking point. Speaking to The Times of India, she said of the host, “But I don’t think he quite expected that I would give it back to him”, and described the change of role this way: “For years, I’ve been sitting in the judge’s chair, laughing at other people’s jokes, so to actually get in there and become part of the fun is a lovely change.” For all seven pairs and each weekend’s results, visit the Pati Patni Aur Panga 2 couples page.
