Early Life and Family

Swaroop Khan comes from Baiya village in Jaisalmer district, in the far west of Rajasthan, as The Times of India noted when it caught up with the “Jaisalmer lad” in 2012. Early reports from his Indian Idol days, including Sify, described him as a Jodhpur boy instead; both places are in the Marwar region. His year of birth is 1991, which fits the ages the press gave him over the years: 19 in the summer of 2010, 20 in March 2012 and 34 in June 2026. The exact date varies between sources, so this page gives the year only.

Music is the family trade. His forefathers were Manganiyar musicians, the hereditary folk singers of the Thar, The Tribune wrote in 2017, and he has said that singing has been part of his upbringing. Until the talent show he had never sung in Hindi at all; he learnt to speak and sing the language during and after the competition.

Indian Idol 5 (2010)

Swaroop entered the fifth season of Sony’s Indian Idol in 2010, when Anu Malik, Sunidhi Chauhan and Salim Merchant were the judges and Hussain Kuwajerwala and Abhijeet Sawant hosted. His rustic Rajasthani voice took him deep into the season. He was eliminated in August 2010 just short of the final three, finishing fourth, after Rakesh Maini, Bhoomi Trivedi and eventual winner Sreeram made the Top 3, according to Sify and the season table on Wikipedia.

The show paid off before it was even over. In July 2010 composer Bappi Lahiri, impressed by his voice, signed him for the title track of The Film Emotional Atyachar; Hindustan Times reported that the recording took place at Lahiri’s studio on 24 July 2010, with the composer saying Swaroop “truly represents the soulful Rajasthani folk music in all its glory”. Salim-Sulaiman, his mentors on the show, later had him record an alaap for “Judas – The Desi Remix”, their Indian take on the Lady Gaga track. He has said Indian Idol 5 changed how he thought about singing.

Playback Career: PK, Padmaavat and Beyond

Bollywood’s biggest call came in 2014. For one PK song Rajkumar Hirani was after an authentic Rajasthani sound, and he picked Swaroop for “Tharki Chokro”, a number picturised on Sanjay Dutt and Aamir Khan; The Times of India called it the first time he had sung for a project of that size. The same year he sang “Hawaa Hawaai” for the film of that name, “Udaari” in Filmistaan, and featured on Rapperiya Baalam’s folk-hip hop hit “Mharo Rajasthan”.

Then came “Ghoomar”. Composed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Padmaavat, the song was released on 25 October 2017 with Deepika Padukone performing the traditional Rajasthani dance on screen. Shreya Ghoshal and Swaroop Khan sang it, and he wrote its Rajasthani lyrics alongside A. M. Turaz’s Hindi, per Wikipedia; the soundtrack credits list him for Rajasthani lyrics and backing vocals. The song earned a Mirchi Music Awards nomination for Raag-Inspired Song of the Year. His other film songs include “Mehandi” (Dhanak, 2016), “Bahut Hua Samman” (Mukkabaaz, 2018), “Jai Ho Pehlwaan” (the Hindi version of Pehlwaan, 2019) and “Crazy Lagdi” (Motichoor Chaknachoor, 2019).

Folk remains the centre of his work. He sang “Kesariya Balam” at the Rajasthan Day celebrations in Jaipur in 2012, and told TOI that “folk music will always remain in my blood”. Asked in 2020 whether remixes threaten the tradition, he told IANS, in an interview carried by The Sentinel: “Folk music is like an ocean. It is vast and huge.”

Swaroop Khan in Indian Idol 17: Legends Return (2026)

Sixteen years after his first run, Swaroop is back on the show. Sony Entertainment Television and Sony LIV have brought 24 former contestants together for Indian Idol Legends Return, produced by Fremantle, which premiered on 17 October 2026 and airs every Saturday and Sunday at 8 PM, according to Medianews4u. The singers compete in 12 duos, Himesh Reshammiya returns as Superstar Judge, Aditya Narayan hosts, and the contestants also score one another’s performances.

Sony’s line-up, carried by Indian Broadcasting World, pairs “Swaroopp Khan and Ritika Raj”, a Season 15 contestant who finished tenth. Ahead of the premiere he said their musical chemistry had grown naturally through rehearsals and performances, and he told Bollyy: “Ritika ke saath perform karna mere liye genuinely bahut exciting experience raha hai.” IWMBuzz‘s review of the opening weekend, which introduced all 24 returning artists, lists the duo among the season’s pairs. The other duos include Salman Ali and Mohd Danish, Prajakta Shukre and Amit Sana, and Rishi Singh and Anshika Chonkar; the full list is on our Indian Idol 17 contestants page.

The Day Google Said He Had Died

In early June 2026 Swaroop found himself reading his own obituary. Google’s knowledge panel wrongly listed him as deceased, and the false information briefly appeared on Wikipedia as well. He posted that he was alive and well, and the entries were corrected quickly, Free Press Journal and Bollywood Bubble reported. The episode is also why the odd search result still pops up: he is very much performing.

Lesser-Known Facts
