Early Life and Family
Born in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, on 29 November 1987, Prajakta grew up with music at home. Filmibeat says her mother taught music, and that Prajakta was singing from a young age and kept up her training all through childhood. Wikipedia notes that she started taking part in singing competitions from the age of four.
She was still a schoolgirl when Indian Idol came along. In a 2005 interview with The Times of India, a 17-year-old Prajakta said she had opted for science in Class XI “because I wanted to be an engineer and a playback singer”. The show soon forced a choice. Her Class XII board exams were due to start on 1 March 2005 — the same day the channel called her back to Mumbai to perform at the grand finale. “It was a tough choice, but I chose the latter,” she told the paper, choosing the finale over the exams. She told the paper she had not quit studies but simply dropped a year.
She has not publicly confirmed details of her married life in any reliable source we could verify, so this page does not name a spouse. Profile sites give contradictory information on this.
Indian Idol Season 1 Journey
Prajakta was a 12th-standard student when she joined the first season of Indian Idol, which ran between 30 October 2004 and 5 March 2005 and was judged by Sonu Nigam, Farah Khan and Anu Malik. No other woman made it as far as the top five that year, and she ended the season in fourth place, as the 3rd runner-up.
The final top four of that historic season:
- Abhijeet Sawant (Mumbai) — winner
- Amit Sana (Bhilai) — 1st runner-up
- Rahul Vaidya (Nagpur) — 2nd runner-up
- Prajakta Shukre (Jabalpur) — 3rd runner-up
Two decades later, Amit Sana is her reported partner on Indian Idol 17: Legends Return, and she has also performed on many stage shows with the season’s winner, Abhijeet Sawant.
Music Career: Album and Playback Songs
After the show, offers to sing professionally followed. She was signed by Sony BMG and released her debut solo album with composer Leslee Lewis — Dhakka (2007), whose tracks include “Ithun Dhakka”, “Kuch To Kaho”, “Rangeela Re”, “Gajab Hua” and “Neend Churayi Meri”.
Her film work runs from 2005 to 2025. Songs credited to her on Wikipedia include:
| Year | Film | Song |
|---|---|---|
| 2005 | Shaadi No. 1 | Hello Madam |
| 2006 | Jaan-E-Mann | Kabul Kar Le |
| 2010 | Tees Maar Khan | Happy Ending |
| 2014 | Jigariyaa | Mora Rangddar Saiyyaan |
| 2017 | FU: Friendship Unlimited | Uff Tuza Ha Jalwa |

| 2021 | Thalaivii | Teri Aankhon Mein |
| 2024 | Vedaa | Mummy Ji |

Her recorded work is not limited to film songs: Filmibeat also counts independent singles, remixes and devotional music among it. In 2008 she returned to reality TV on STAR Plus’s Jo Jeeta Wohi Super Star, a contest that brought together winners and runners-up of earlier singing shows; the show’s Wikipedia page lists her as a wild card entry.
Bigg Boss Marathi 6
In January 2026 Prajakta entered the Bigg Boss Marathi house. The sixth season opened on 11 January 2026, on Colors Marathi and JioHotstar, and host Riteish Deshmukh introduced 17 housemates at the launch. She entered on Day 1 and was evicted on Day 63. The season’s finale aired on 19 April 2026, with Tanvi Kolte winning and Raqesh Bapat finishing runner-up.
Speaking to The Times of India after her exit, she called herself ready to move on: “That chapter is over and now it is time for the actual world.” The paper described her as a singer-composer, and she hinted that fans would soon hear “my composition sung by one of India’s biggest and loved artists”.
She was back on the Indian Idol stage before the new season was announced: during the Top 7 round of Indian Idol 16 in July 2026, the season’s episode table lists her singing “O Sathi Chal” with finalist Tanishk Shukla.
Indian Idol 17: Legends Return
Prajakta’s latest stop is Indian Idol Legends Return, Sony Entertainment Television’s season of returning contestants, judged by Himesh Reshammiya. It began at 8 PM on Saturday, 17 October 2026, and airs every weekend on TV and on SonyLIV. In the SET announcement carried by Indian Broadcasting World, the singers compete in pairs, and Prajakta’s partner is Amit Sana, the 1st runner-up of her own 2004–05 season. AltBollywood reports 24 former contestants competing in 12 pairs, and Prajakta features in the first promo. See the full Indian Idol 17 contestants list for all the pairs.
