Speaking to IANS on the night he won Indian Idol, he said singing was the family business, that he had begun earning from it at the age of seven, and that his formal schooling stopped at around class 9 or 10. He also described his family as very poor and said the prize money would go first towards repairing the roof of the family home and clearing a loan.
Date of birth
No reliable outlet has published Salman Ali’s full date of birth, and Wikipedia does not list one. Celebrity profile sites agree on 14 January but split on the year: India Forums says 1998, while Famous Birthdays says 1999. Until a firm source appears, we are not printing an age for him.
Career
Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs (2011)
His television story began on Zee TV, where he finished as first runner-up of the 2011 edition of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs.
Indian Idol 10 winner (2018)
Salman entered the tenth season of Sony TV’s Indian Idol in 2018 and was named the winner on Sunday, 23 December. Ankush Bhardwaj and Neelanjana Ray were the runners-up, and Nitin Kumar and Vibhor Parashar made up the rest of the final line-up, The Quint reported, carrying the IANS story. He took home a Rs 25 lakh cheque from the channel along with a Datsun car.
At the finale, Shah Rukh Khan came on stage with Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, and judges Neha Kakkar, Vishal Dadlani and Javed Ali also performed. Salman told IANS his village was celebrating with sweets and firecrackers, and that he hoped to work in Bollywood next.
By the time he lifted the trophy, he had already recorded for the screen. He was a background voice on “Sab Badhiya Hai” from Sui Dhaaga: Made in India, composed by Anu Malik, and he sang the theme for Sony TV’s historical serial Chandragupta Maurya.
Film songs
Wikipedia lists “Jai He” from Satellite Shankar (2019) as his formal playback debut. The same year he sang the duet “Awara” in Salman Khan’s Dabangg 3; BizAsia billed that track as his Bollywood debut. Asked about “Awara” years later, he said he had felt excited and nervous at once because the chance carried real responsibility.
A long association with Himesh Reshammiya followed. The composer used him on a remix of “Teri Meri Kahani” for Happy Hardy and Heer (2020), on “Manjha” in Middle Class Love (2022) and on “Aafaton Ke Daur Mein” in Badass Ravi Kumar (2025). Outside Himesh’s films he sang “Ishq Ka Chav” for the Zee5 film Luv Ki Arrange Marriage (2024).

Titled Indian Idol: Legends Return, it opens on 17 October 2026 and airs on Saturdays and Sundays at 8 pm on Sony Entertainment Television, with episodes also on Sony LIV, according to The Daily Jagran. Himesh Reshammiya is back as judge, and past winners, runners-up and finalists get a second shot at the title.
Salman is one of two former champions in the confirmed cast, the other being Season 1 winner Abhijeet Sawant. Other returning names include Devender Pal Singh, Prajakta Shukre and Season 16 runner-up Anshika Chonkar.
Personal Life
Salman keeps his private life largely out of the news.
