Education and Background

Mayuri is from the Tollygunge area of Kolkata. She finished her studies before she ever tried for Indian Idol: a postgraduate degree in sociology at Presidency University, followed by a B.Ed. She had also trained as a singer. She has said that Kavita Krishnamurthy even read her master’s dissertation and a research paper, and nudged her to keep studying.

She also teaches. In an interview with The Telegraph Online, reproduced on Fremantle India’s site, she said she runs her own singing school, Konthoshruti Academy, in Tollygunge and hopes to grow it. In the same conversation she said she wanted more stage shows, to write original songs and to make a name as a playback singer.

Bengali Shows and Songs Before Indian Idol

The earliest TV contest she mentions is Super Singer, the Bengali contest hosted by Jisshu U Sengupta that ran through the COVID lockdown. She calls it Super Singer Season 2. When the final was decided in October 2020, The Times of India reported that Sanchari Sengupta took the title, Mayuri Saha came second and Deepmala Haldar third. Kavita Krishnamurthy was one of the judges when the show started, and Mayuri describes her as her mentor from that season onward. The two have stayed close: she visits Kavita whenever she is in Bangalore, and they have toured together, including in the US.

In 2023 she competed on Zee Bangla’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. Alongside the contests she recorded Bengali singles. “Tomay Niye Jabo Ami”, a duet with Prasenjit Mallick, was featured by The Times of India in August 2020. “Tomar Chokhe”, with music by Utpal Das and lyrics by Jayanta Biswas, followed in April 2024.

Indian Idol 15 (2024–2025)

How she got to the audition is a story she likes to tell. She had gone to a show in Kolkata but could not get a ticket, so she waited outside and listened to the soundcheck. She waved and sang along in her own way, and Shreya noticed her. The singer told her that Indian Idol auditions were coming up and that she should try. With her degrees done, Mayuri decided to go for it.

The audition promo, covered by IWMBuzz in October 2024, showed judges Shreya Ghoshal, Vishal Dadlani and Badshah won over by her classical grounding. Shreya then gave her the season’s platinum mic. This award was new that year, created to mark two decades of Indian Idol. Each judge could hand out only one, and it guaranteed a place in the Top 15. Vishal’s went to Srijan Porail and Badshah’s to Sneha Shankar.

Her first gala song was “Ami Je Tomar 3.0”, which Filmibeat described as a classical-beatbox version. Later weeks brought “Gali Mein Aaj Chaand Nikala” paired with “Ghunghat Ki Aad Se Dilbar Ka”, “Do Lafzon Ki Hai”, “Hawa Hawaii”, “Sun Saiba Sun”, “Aisi Deewangi”, “Meri Mehbooba” and “Naam Gum Jayega”. For one performance she joined “Sanware” with “Jiya Jale”, an idea Anand Sharma backed and helped arrange, and she reworked “Piya Bawri” to take it, in her words, “from retro to metro”. In November 2024 A. R. Rahman followed her back on Instagram after she posted her own version of one of his songs, a story reported by both Filmibeat and Face2News.

She credits all three judges with shaping her. Shreya often sang the key lines back to contestants to teach diction and expression, Vishal explained what a composer wants from a singer, and Badshah made sure nobody felt intimidated. Her closest friends in the group were Myscmme Bosu, Manasi Ghosh and Ranjini Sen Gupta.

Her run ended in the Top 11 week built around Udit Narayan and Kavita Krishnamurthy. With Shreya and Kavita on stage, she performed “Nimbooda Nimbooda” and “Dola Re”, and she has called singing “Dola Re” in front of them surreal. She was voted out on 23 February 2025 after getting the fewest audience votes, which left her 11th. Manasi Ghosh went on to win the season on 6 April 2025.
